In addition to the required University application, three letters of recommendation, transcripts of previous undergraduate and graduate work, and GRE scores for the General Exam are required. Foreign students are also required to take the TOEFL exam to demonstrate English fluency. All applicants are automatically considered for financial aid.

Financial Aid
The department typically does not offer financial support to non-Ph.D. students.

For doctoral students, financial aid is awarded on an annual basis (contingent upon satisfactory performance) and is available in the form of fellowships and teaching assistantships. The responsibilities of a first-year student, who has had no prior graduate training in any area, are to assist in discussion sections of large undergraduate courses, such as introductory statistics and calculus. After the first year, support typically consists of teaching assistantships, which involve the teaching of undergraduate courses in calculus and statistics. Academic year 02-03 stipends range from $12,000 to $13,000, depending upon experience and duties. Some summer support is also available, on a competitive basis, making possible a total 11 month package of $15,500 to $16,800.
