Statistics Department UNIX Software Status

Last Updated: 13 November 2001

  • eispack, linpack, lapack : copy relevant files from /home/library/netlib.dir
  • GMT : This one produces beautiful maps, but is complicated. (See the UVa Statistics help on Generic Mapping Tool web page.)
  • IDL v 5.3 : Data analysis/ visualization software (For a complete discription of IDL, refer to the URL http://www.rsinc.com/idl/index.cfm. For further information on how to get started with IDL, refer to this ITC link.)
  • IMSL (International Mathematical and Statistical Library): These are a collection of subroutines that can be linked with FORTRAN and C programs. See the ITC's research computing www pages on IMSL. Professor Perrugia has written some hints on using IMSL.
  • Island Productivity Series v 6 : This is a collection of programs IslandWrite, IslandDraw, IslandPaint, IslandChart, IslandEquation, IslandPresents, IslandTable, IslandShow. We have a single user license which is enforced by a license manager program so don't hog the program if you don't need it.
    • The program has a MacIntosh like interface with icons which are self explanatory. You must be running the OpenWindows interface. Then to run the program type IslandWrite (or IslandDraw, IslandPaint, etc. ) Notice that IslandWrite is one word and pay careful attention to which letters are capitalized.
    • Quick Start guide is in computer room.
    • IslandEquation is a wyswyg equation editor.
    • IslandDraw has postscript editing capabilities. It can take a postscript file (such as a graphic file produced by Splus), allow you to modify it, and produce another postscript file.
    • EDITING POSTSCRIPT FILES HAS PRIORITY OVER ALL OTHER USES.
  • LyX u: Provides an easy to use WYSIWYG interface to the LaTeX package. To invoke LyX use the command lyx. (Further documentation is available from ITC and LyX home page.)
  • Mathematica: use command math . (See the ITC's research computing www pages on Mathematica.)
  • Maple : use command maple for text interface and xmaple for x-windows interface.
    • The online help is excellent. Use the command tutorial(); (note trailing semi-colon). See also the ITC's research computing www pages on Maple.
  • Matlab : use command matlab . (See the ITC's research computing www pages on Matlab.)
  • Minitab v. 13.1: On PC's in microcomputing lab
  • NCAR : Graphics Visualization Package(Documentation located HERE along with ITC link)
  • Numerical recipes : copy relevant files from /home/library
    • version 1 is available in both FORTRAN and C
    • Documentation may be purchased in the book Press et al, Numerical Recipes , Cambridge, University Press or through the Numerical recipes web site. Download postscript version of documentation and view the resulting file using the UNIX command ghostview .
  • SAS v. 6.12 : Use command sas . We now have almost all SAS modules.
  • SAS v. 8.1 : On PC's in microcomputing lab
  • Splus v. 6.0 (UNIVERSITY - ITC server): use command: Splus or Splus6
    • The Department maintains multiple versions of Splus. For comments on compatibility issues, click here.
  • Splus v. 5.1 (UNIVERSITY - ITC server): use command: /p0/software/Splus5.1/splus/Splus5
    Splus v. 5.1 (local) : use command Splus5.local
    • The Department's license for Splus is a SINGLE USER LICENSE and the restrictions are enforced by a continuously running license manager. This means that if someone is running either Splus.local or Splus5.local NOBODY ELSE CAN RUN THE DEPARTMENT'S LICENSE. Use of this license is restricted to persons who need to run either the GARCH or WAVELETS modules which we have purchased.
    • There are important differences and incompatibilities between Splus version 5.1 and version 3.4. Before switching to 5.1, please read the following release notes.
    • For adding Greek letters, subscripts, and superscripts to Splus graphics, click HERE .
  • Splus v. 3.4 (UNIVERSITY - ITC server) : use command: /common/splus34/home.solaris/Splus
    Splus v. 3.4 (local) : use command Splus.local
    • The University licenses on juno are multiple user licenses. Always use these versions if possible. The local version is a single user license and should only be used if absolutely necessary. People who tie up a local license without suitable need will have their hands chopped off.
    • IMPORTANT VERSION DIFFERENCE starting with version 3.3 : People who use FORTRAN programs within Splus should recompile them as follows: suppose the source code is in the file myprogram.f.
    • From the UNIX prompt level type Splus COMPILE myprogram.f
    • This creates a new file mprogram.o .. Now, from within Splus use the Splus command dyn.load2("myprogram.o") .
    • GARCH AND WAVELETS MODULES : The Department has purchased the Generalized AutoRegressive with Conditional Heteroscedasticity modelling and the wavelets modules. These modules are written by the Splus folks and documentation can be borrowed from Prof. Chang. They run only under the local license. To mount them, from within the Splus.local command, use the command module(garch) or module(wavelets) .
    • THIRD PARTY LIBRARIES : We are now mounting 3rd party (not maintained by Splus) libraries in /home/library/Splus. Currently, we have mounted the Hmisc and Design libraries developed by Frank Harrell and the world maps data set. See the README files in /home/library/Splus. Documentation on the maps library is also available there.
  • Splus 2000: On PC's in microcomputing lab
  • SPSS v 6.14 : Use command spss
  • SPSS v. 10.0: On PC's in microcomputing lab
  • SUDAAN v. 7.5 : We are running only the SAS 6.12 callable versions. Note that within SAS, the SUDAAN LOGISTIC procedure is called RLOGIST (to avoid conflict with the SAS proc LOGISTIC).
  • TEX: We are running the teTeX package, an extension of LaTeX. For documentation see ITC research computing's www page: LaTeX.
  • xlispstat : This is a free statistics program developed by the School of Statistics, University of Minnesota. PC and Mac versions are available from them, also without charge. It can be run using the run instruction /home/library/bin/xlispstat . To quit xlispstat, type (exit) . Documentation is available in the directory /home/library/xlispstat-3-50.dir/doc.
