Suggested Program for Mathematics Majors interested in Statistics
The Mathematics major offers a Probability and Statistics Option. The Department of Statistics recommends that, within this option, a student interested in applied statistics take STAT 512 and STAT 513, whereas a student planning graduate studies in Statistics take STAT 512 and STAT 519. The undergraduate major in Mathematics is described more completely in the brochure "Undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics" available from the Department of Mathematics.

Suggested Statistics Courses

STAT 110 (Chance: Introduction to Statistics) is an introductory course to statistical thinking; it satisfies the College's natural science area requirements.

STAT 112 (Introduction to Statistics) is an introductory statistics course which is required for entry to the McIntire School of Commerce.

STAT 212 (Introduction to Statistical Analysis) is a calculus-based introduction to probability and statistical theory. This course is identical in every way to ECON 371. Students intending to major in Economics are required to take one and only one of STAT 212 or ECON 371.

STAT 301 (Statistical Computing and Graphics) and STAT 313 (Design and Analysis of Sample Surveys) are second statistics courses suitable for students with an introductory course such as STAT 110 and STAT 112.

STAT 500 (Introduction to Applied Statistics) is a one semester route into all the 500 level applied statistics courses except STAT 517.

The 500-level applied statistics courses are STAT 512, 513, 514, 516, 517 and 531. These courses require a calculus-based introductory course in statistics, such as MATH 312/510. MATH 511 is a related course with wide applications.

The Minor in Statistics and Data Analysis is designed to meet the needs of several types of students: the student interested in applying Statistics to some other field, the student interested in exploring a future career in Biostatistics or Applied Statistics, the student interested in a career in actuarial statistics, or the mathematically-minded student interested in graduate study in Statistics.

Of these 500-level statistics courses, STAT 512 (Applied Linear Models) is the most important and the foundation behind most statistical modelling. STAT 513 (Applied Multivariate Analysis) is also of fundamental importance. We strongly suggest that the study of applied statistics start with these two courses.

STAT 519 is a theoretical statistics course which serves as a prerequisite for the 700-level applied statistics courses: STAT 713, 715, 718, 721.

Beyond these basic recommendations, students interested in applying Statistics to the social sciences should take STAT 313, those interested in Statistics and economics should take STAT 517, those interested in Biostatistics should take STAT 514, and those interested in industrial quality control should take STAT 516 and perhaps STAT 517.

The material for the first actuarial examination in probability and statistics is partially covered in the sequence MATH 311/509, 312/510. The two course sequence MATH 311/509 and 312/510 does not have enough discussion of theoretical and multivariate statistics and additional study is required. These additional topics (and more!) are covered in STAT 519. STAT 540 and 541 are followup courses in Actuarial Statistics to prepare for the later exams, but is not helpful for the first probability and statistics exam. STAT 540 and 541 may be taken in either order.
